Dave Harvey & Tony Robertson to Host Gibson Acoustic Instrument Workshop
Dave Harvey and Tony Robertson will be joining forces for a Gibson Acoustic Instrument Workshop at Athens State University as part of the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Concert Series. The event will close out the five-part series that leads up to the 2019 Fiddlers Convention in October, allowing bluegrass lovers to enjoy the sounds of old-time music throughout the year. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, October 1 at 7:00 pm in McCandless Hall.
Dave Harvey grew up surrounded by the music of bluegrass and hit the road at age 14, touring as a member of the Red Allen band. In 1985, Dave was recruited by bluegrass great, Larry Sparks. He spent nearly four years as a member of Sparks’ band, the Lonesome Ramblers, and can be heard on two recordings, “Gonna Be Movin’” and the now-classic, “Silver Reflections.” Dave is now Gibson Master Luthier and recently built a replica of Big Mon’s iconic Loar F-5, currently on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Nashville.
Tony Robertson started playing guitar at age 13 and mandolin and banjo around age 15. At age 17, he started playing in his first bluegrass band named “The Home-Made String Band.” From then on, Tony played in many bands and traveled extensively over the Southeast playing at bluegrass festivals and churches. In 2000, Tony joined the bluegrass band, “Iron Horse.” To date, Iron Horse has recorded 23 projects, 15 for CMH Records in Los Angeles, CA, and 7 independently produced projects. The band has gone on to be nominated twice for Grammy awards and has had their version of “Night on the Sun” featured as part of the soundtrack on HBO’s True Blood Season 3 Episode 8.
Tickets for the event are $10.00 and can be purchased by visiting www.TVOTFC.org or calling the office of University Advancement at 256-233-8185.
